INDOOR FLYING at IVCMAC
Sunday 11th march 2012

Impington Village College, Cambridge. 9.00am to 5.00pm

We will once again be using the large (100 x 50 x 28 ft) sports hall at the College. The only restrictions are no radio models in the main hall and no internal combustion engines, jets or catapults anywhere.

Also Round The Pole (4.5 metre lines) and small electric helicopter and fixed wing flying (X twin or Vapor type) in a separate hall (radio or infra red).

SAMS MODELS will be in attendance to supply all your needs on the day.
Competitions
There will be three low key free flight (AND ONE CAR!) competitions:
  • A duration competition for the BMFA Gyminnie Cricket. To be as defined in the BMFA kit, tissue covered, plastic prop from the kit and a minimum weight without rubber of 9.0gm. Any size and source of rubber can be used! Kits are widely available, including from SAMS models and the BMFA. If you cannot get one then email or phone the contact below.

  • The usual duration event for Bostonian models. Any design to the Bostonian formula (If you are unclear about the Bostonian formula rules please see here or ring or email the contact below).

  • Frog Juniors. Lots of plans are available but if you do not have one already get onto Mike Stuart's website here, and find loads of plans. If you are webless contact below.

  • Each competition will be for the total of best three flights. Get your flights timed and reported to control. As many attempts as you like. Awards in each event for overall winner and best junior (under 18). Bostonians to be flown ROG and they will be weighed (minimum 14 grams without rubber motor)! No builder of model requirement in either competition. Build one for your wife (or husband), child or grandchild who has to wind and launch.

  • We will also feature the racing car event as usual. This is a fun event for rubber powered cars. We vary the distance to be covered, number of heats etc depending on the entrants on the day! Ring or email the contact below for any further information and for plans of suitable vehicles.
Exhibition
We would like the usual varied exhibition - bring what ever you like but please bring something (don't be shy) as this is a feature much enjoyed by our visitors - both flyers and spectators. It is also a good way of showing our kind of modelling to the public.
Seminar
Roger Simmonds will give a talk on reproducing the colour printed balsa kits of yesteryear. Many of you will know Roger from his Smoke Trails columns in SAM Speaks and will have seen him flying his lovely reproductions of old Jetex profiles at Old Warden and elsewhere. It will be an inspirational talk!
Round the Pole and Small Radio Helicopters
David and Will Beavor will be bringing their equipment, using Ballard's 4605 connectors at the model and will share the second hall with small R/C helicopters and fixed wing models.
Refreshments
Once again the excellent fare from our trusty team will be available all day. No one need go hungry!

Bostonian Rules
The Bostonian is a class of small rubber models that has been flown in the U.S. for about 30 years and has an excellent specification for indoor or outdoor use.
The full rules are:
Maximum span
16 inches
Maximum wing chord
3 inches
Overall length
14 inches (thrust button to rear extremity)
Minimum weight
14 grams (half an ounce) without rubber
Maximum prop. diameter
6 inches
Capable of rise off ground
(at least 2 wheels on separate u/c legs)
Fuselage must contain a box space of 1.5 x 2.5 x 3.0 inches and must have transparent front and side windows at least 1 inch square.

There are a lot of designs available to these rules, including at least two kits.
A Good example of a Bostonian with an ample supply of both charisma and performance is Mike Stuart's "SortaSenator" pastiche of the old Kiel Kraft design below.

The plan (shown below) may be obtained as a PDF which should print at the correct size from Mike's website

SortaSenator
This is a plan for Mike Stuart's SortaSenator. It may be downloaded by right clicking on the image and selecting "Save Picture As..." (or "Save Image As..." in some browsers). The image should then be resized to give a wing span of 16 inches.
